The Story of Music For White People To Clap To

Music for White People to Clap To is the first EP I released with the intention of putting it on Bandcamp. It consisted mainly of songs that I wanted on DAVE 3, but wouldn’t work (with the exception of one, but we’ll get to that). This one had more songs than usual which had guitar featured as the main instrument.

OCEAN

I don’t have much to say about this one. I was listening to a lot of American Football at the time so that’s probably where the tapping idea came from*. Also the bass is not playing in the same key as the guitar.

*I have no idea what prompted me to write this. To my knowledge, on the first American Football album, there is no tapping

MELLY

I wasn’t sure if I was going to put this on Big Narf at the time, so I put it on here. The main beat is lifted from a song called “Black Cats” from Call of Duty: World At War. The actual track features sounds from a video playing the mission where the song is featured.

“SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE HUMANS!”

I’ve since regretted putting this on the EP, as it was nowhere near finished and disrupted the flow of the album. This was later used as one of the sections in the song “All Hail the Time Cube” on D4VE. The name is a direct quote from an interaction between SCP-1171-1 and a foundation agent.

OCEOUT

This one was a song I had originally brought to Matchhead with the hopes we could use it in a song. We never ended up using it because we couldn’t figure out the key it was in, so I used it. The bassline is playing in a completely different key because I have no idea what keys are. Also I based the main rhythm and melody off of In Reverse by Punchlove, so sue me I guess.

“Fun” Facts

  • I had the idea for the opening and closing tracks to be named the way they are when I was in the ocean in Hilton Head

  • Melly was originally called Black Cats

  • Melly was the first song I released to feature slap bass

  • I put Melly right after Ocean because I thought it would be funny to have a more indie rock influenced song right before a heavy hitting and loud song.

  • Ocean is the first song I released to feature tapping

  • The front cover is a heavily edited picture of me looking through the doorway in one of my friends’ rooms

  • The back cover is a picture of me riding the Boo Blasters ride at King’s Island with the blaster to my head

  • The name came about when my dad’s friend told me I should make an album called Music for White People to Clap To (brought about when we were watching Radkey open for the Foo Fighters)

  • The back cover has nobody listed as playing on the album, and no location where it was recorded. I most likely forgot to add them if I am being honest.

  • The back cover was originally a picture I took of graffiti painted on a sidewalk that read “Drugs = BAD”. At this point, it featured no photo credits and no “Some of my best friends are humans”.

  • The album was released August 28th, 2021 at 4:20 PM. I have no idea why I released it on the 28th, I probably just asked someone to give me a number and they said 28.

  • This is the last album I have made (as of 3/6/22) that has had a title that was somebody’s pet’s name.
